John,
We’re livid, but so, so proud.
Yesterday, in DC, our director Evan Greer was kicked out of Project Liberty’s “Summit on the Future of the Internet” for confronting notorious transphobe Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) for her hateful rhetoric. Mace, who was inexplicably invited to speak despite lacking any background in tech policy, launched into a diatribe as Evan was dragged out of the room, derailing the digital rights conversation for minutes with vile comments about trans people’s genitalia. You can view the full video here.1
Evan was crystal clear about why she stood up to Rep. Mace, asking the room: “Is this the future of the Internet we want? Are we building an Internet with free speech and safety for all people? Or just the privileged few?” At Fight, we have a vision of the Internet as a welcoming and generative space where ALL people should be able to thrive without fear of censorship and surveillance. And we don’t just give lip service to that vision–we stand on business.
Evan’s brave display of principled leadership embodied Fight’s vision loud and clear. But it also likely burned some bridges with the tech policy funders willing to platform bigots like Mace for the sake of “bipartisanship.” Will you pitch in to help us build new bridges rooted in true solidarity with all Internet users? (and maybe buy Evan a drink, too.)
SUPPORT FIGHT
Thanks, John. Join us in sharing Evan’s message on social media2,3,4,5 and denouncing bigotry on every stage and in every room.
With pride,
The team at Fight for the Future
