Mike Johnson announces transgender bathroom ban in Capitol after Sarah McBride's election
-- USA TODAY
John,
You've heard the news: the anti-LGBTQ+ leader of the U.S. House, Mike Johnson, announced a policy barring Congresswoman-Elect Sarah McBride from using the bathroom. It’s sad but true: the anti-equality majority is more focused on policing bathroom access than addressing real issues impacting Americans.
What's happening to Sarah is unacceptable. But it isn't new. After Zooey Zephyr made history as the first out trans person elected in Montana, she was unfairly targeted and censured for speaking out against an anti-trans bill. Mauree Turner, the first out non-binary legislator in the U.S., faced similar attacks when they stood up for protesters opposing a gender-affirming care ban in Oklahoma.
John, we proudly defend Zooey and Mauree then, and we've got Sarah's back now. But we cannot let these historic firsts stand alone. We must elect more out trans and non-binary leaders at all levels of government. Donate today to defend leaders like Sarah, Zooey and Mauree and ENSURE we elect more trans leaders like them!
We must send a powerful message: transphobia and homophobia have no place in government or society. Let’s show these bigots that their attacks won’t stop progress. Together, we will protect LGBTQ+ rights, defend trans equality, and ensure these trailblazers aren’t the last. Pitch in today to send a clear message: we're protecting LGBTQ+ rights and trans equality!
Thank you,
