John, I want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate our newest Democratic senators-elect who will be joining me in the U.S. Senate in January.
They are history makers.
In January, for the first time in American history, two Black women will serve in the United States Senate at the same time. Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland and Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware will double the number of elected Black women in the Senate’s history.
They will be joining the most diverse Senate in history, alongside my incoming New Jersey colleague Andy Kim, who will become the first Korean American elected to the Senate; Ruben Gallego, the first Latino elected to represent Arizona in the Senate; Elissa Slotkin, the first Jewish woman elected to Congress in Michigan; and Adam Schiff, the first Jewish man elected to the Senate in California.
When I was first sworn in 11 years ago, the Senate was the least diverse place I had ever worked by any metric — age, gender, background, and race.
I am proud that with your help, we are continuing to shift to a body that more closely reflects the America it serves.
We are our ancestors’ wildest dreams. Just a century ago, months after women got the right to vote, and a generation or two from slavery, few would have imagined this incoming class of senators.
I celebrate these extraordinary public servants and look forward to working with them in the months and years to come.
And I want to thank you, John, for your steadfast support over these past two years in helping elect them.
Let’s get to work!
With love and gratitude,
Cory
