News from Representative Himes

Dear Friend,

With the holidays fast approaching, I wanted to take a moment to share some of my recent adventures before we all start dreaming of turkey. I’d also like to express my gratitude for having earned another two years as your Representative. I look forward to getting back to work for you and delivering for our community.

Reducing I-95 Traffic in Stamford:

Most of us here in Southwest Connecticut are all-too-familiar with sitting in standstill traffic. I suspect that is why our smiles are so big in the photo below: I joined federal, state, and local officials to announce that, thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, new traffic-reducing auxiliary lanes will be installed between Exits 6 and 7 on I-95 in Stamford. These improvements will reduce traffic by providing drivers more time to merge on or off the highway. Construction is expected to be completed by late 2025.

Celebrating Newly Minted Americans:

I’ve encountered few more inspiring events during my time in government than naturalization ceremonies. Watching the joy and pride radiate from our country’s newest citizens as their families celebrate is always inspiring. That people fight so hard and wait so long to obtain their American citizenship is a testament to our nearly 250-year-long experiment in self-governance. It was a wonderful morning in Bridgeport cheering on these new Americans citizens– congratulations!

Touching Grass at New Pond Farm:

Located on 102 beautiful acres in West Redding, New Pond Farm incorporates its pollinator meadow, animals, and astronomy buildings, among other resources, into its classes to provide visitors a hands-on learning experience. I toured the educational center to learn more about how the $200,000 in federal funding I helped deliver to the non-profit will be used to advance the farm’s wetland renewal project. From the observatory to the dairy barn, I was blown away by New Pond Farm’s facilities – the opportunities to learn about the natural world are endless.

Exploring the Barnum Museum:

Closed since a 2010 tornado damaged the building, the Barnum Museum—home to more than 60,000 artifacts related to the famed circus showman and former Bridgeport Mayor P.T. Barnum—is nearing its grand reopening. I got a sneak peak of the newly renovated space and can report that the building’s beauty and the magnitude of the collection are mesmerizing. Looking forward to coming back once it is fully finished!

Addressing Global Issues on UN Day:

It was a privilege to serve as the speaker for the United Nations Association of Southwestern Connecticut’s UN Day celebration and share my perspective on the current international security landscape as Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee. I discussed the latest developments coming out of Ukraine and the Middle East, US efforts to counter Chinese aggression, and the comprehensive humanitarian operations the UN coordinates in war-torn regions. In these tumultuous times, it was heartening to join such a thoughtful audience to talk through our country’s unique position in international affairs.
