Hi John,
Good news: yesterday the city of Glasgow publicly backed the call for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty! This makes it the third local council in Scotland, and the fifteenth across the UK, to endorse the treaty. They are all now part of a growing global network of cities and sub-national governments who are championing this treaty to end the fossil fuel era.
It’s a great win for us in Scotland, and a sign for everyone campaigning across the UK that our Fossil Fuel Treaty campaign is really building momentum. Thanks to the great work of local activists who have been lobbying their local representatives to do more on this treaty, Glasgow was one of four UK councils in just the last few months to support the treaty, joining North Ayrshire, Stroud and Reading.
Each new council endorsement puts further pressure on the Scottish, Welsh and UK governments to commit to this global plan for a fast and fair phase out of oil, gas and coal. And every email or letter to a local councillor makes a difference.
Let’s build on this success. Will you get involved in the campaign for a Fossil Fuel Treaty?

In contrast to the rising support for a Fossil Fuel Treaty here in the UK, any strong endorsement for a plan to transition from fossil fuels at the UN COP29 climate talks in Baku looks unlikely. As we follow the painfully slow progress of the UN talks, it’s clear that the consensus required of governments at COP before any agreement is made can only take us so far. Even the weakly-phrased commitment at COP28 last year, to "transition from fossil fuels", threatens to be undone this year rather than progress to a stronger commitment to a planned fossil fuel phase out.
This is why we need a Fossil Fuel Treaty.
Faced with the likelihood of a disappointing outcome from COP29, and the prospect of a new US president who will undoubtedly push back against global climate promises, it is heartening to be part of a movement that is progressing a positive vision for an international fossil fuel phase out. Will you join our movement?

We’d love councils the length and breadth of the UK to get behind the call for a treaty, but if you live in Dundee, East Lothian, Worthing, East Cheshire, Lewisham, Bristol or Manchester – then a local campaign is already well underway in your area and looking for more people to get involved. Contact us if you’d like to join them.
I hope you’ll celebrate with me the great progress we’ve made so far in this campaign, and use this success to inspire you to push on with your campaigning locally for a fossil-free future!
Thanks so much for everything you’ve done to get us this far.
Best wishes,
Jane Herbstritt
Scottish campaigns officer
