We can’t even count the number of times our demands for reparations have been met with claims that it would be impossible, John.
Well, we just saw the truth in Palm Springs, California.
Not only is it possible to give Black people the reparations they are due, but we can do it right here, right now. That’s a fact.
Palm Springs, California, just approved $5.9 million to compensate Black and Latino families who were displaced from a neighborhood in the 1960s.
The Palm Springs City Council approved the deal in a unanimous vote Thursday. The council also approved $10 million for a first-time homebuyer assistance program, $10 million for a community land trust, and the creation of a monument commemorating the neighborhood's history.
Reparations are about accountability. Reparations are about the demand for resources needed to repair the historical and ongoing damage to descendants of Africans enslaved in the United States.
Structural discrimination will only be fully addressed through reparations and would encompass the full range of past and ongoing harms to Black people. We need to see this on a larger scale, and we will not stop our fight until we achieve reparations on a national and global scale.
Palm Springs is an important north star we can point to. We take this win and use it to bolster our fight onwards. Our demands are being heard. This win didn’t come overnight and took years of organizing and pressure.
Reparations now. For every Black person in the U.S. Help us fight for that future now by supporting us by donating anything you can.
In love and solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
