We hear big numbers, like millions, billions, and trillions, all the time, especially when talking about current events: 32.6 million people were internally displaced by climate-related disasters in 2022. Global population will hit 10 billion in 2058. The U.S. debt is over 35 trillion dollars.
Conceptualizing these big numbers is hard for both children and adults. This season, our Population Education program wants to help educators teach these larger-than-life numbers in the context of real-world issues. Teaching about big numbers reinforces basic number sense and operations, and it's a critical piece in any study of global issues. To understand global challenges and, ultimately, to fix them, we have to grasp the quantities behind the data.
