Dear John,
Last week, No Labels wrote you to say we did not believe Rep. Matt Gaetz was qualified to be the next Attorney General of the United States.
Fortunately, news just broke that Gaetz has withdrawn his name from consideration.
This development is a testament to several Senators—many of them No Labels allies—who made it clear that they take their constitutional advice and consent role seriously. They stressed that presidential nominees must undergo a rigorous confirmation process, and No Labels is 100% behind them.
The United States Attorney General is one of the most important nominations any president makes. They have broad power in directing the Justice Department to prosecute crimes, protect civil rights, and safeguard national security. However, many Americans are justifiably concerned that the Justice Department has become too politicized. The next Attorney General must have the track record, character, and integrity to convince Americans across the political spectrum they will administer justice fairly and without favor for either party.
We look forward to the U.S. Senate ensuring whoever is confirmed as AG meets this standard.
