Hi Friend,

As we prepare to gather with loved ones for Thanksgiving, it's an ideal time to reflect on our traditions and their impact. While turkeys have become synonymous with this holiday, there are compelling reasons to reconsider this tradition and embrace a kinder, healthier, and more sustainable approach.

Historically, turkeys became a staple of Thanksgiving due to their availability and size, which made them popular for large gatherings. However, modern practices in turkey farming raise significant ethical and environmental concerns. Today, turkeys are selectively bred to be twice the size of those from less than a century ago, leading to severe physical and mental suffering. They endure overcrowded conditions, have difficulty breathing, and often harm one another due to stress. You can find out more about what turkeys experience in their short lives in the animal agriculture industry by watching the video below.
Moreover, turkeys are nurturing creatures. In natural settings, turkey mothers are devoted caregivers, ensuring their young are safe and protected. Sadly, most farm-raised turkeys are deprived of this maternal bond, raised instead in incubators, never experiencing the warmth and love of their mothers.

For humans, consuming turkey carries health risks. Meat from turkeys can harbor harmful bacteria like E.coli and Salmonella.

The turkey industry also poses risks to those who work within it. Workers are often exposed to hazardous conditions, including "poultry dust," which can lead to severe respiratory diseases. These operations, commonly located in rural areas, often pay minimum wage, contributing to economic disparity and hardship.

This Thanksgiving, let's consider the benefits of leaving turkeys off our plates. Vegan alternatives offer a wide array of delicious and satisfying options, suitable for any culinary preference. By embracing these alternatives, we can take a stand against cruelty, improve our health, and protect our planet.

Let's move toward a more compassionate holiday by discussing these issues with family and friends and exploring the diverse world of vegan cuisine. Together, we can create a Thanksgiving that truly embodies gratitude and kindness.

Wishing you a meaningful and joyful Thanksgiving.

Warm regards,
Ben Williamson
