Thanksgiving is a time that carries complex and layered meanings for many in our community. While it can be seen as a day for gratitude and togetherness, it’s also a reminder of the painful history of Native Americans in this country—of land stolen, cultures erased, lives lost and for the continued fight for justice < [link removed] > . For LGBTQ+ people, Thanksgiving can bring additional complications, particularly for those who may not feel welcome or affirmed at traditional family gatherings. That’s why, at The Center, we honor both the need for reflection and the importance of creating spaces of joy, connection, advocacy and belonging.
This year, as we navigate a challenging political environment where the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ people are under attack, the idea of chosen family feels more critical than ever. For many LGBTQ+ people, chosen family < [link removed] > isn’t just a concept—it’s a lifeline. It’s about creating a network of love, support, and solidarity in the face of adversity.
That’s the spirit behind Thanks for Being Queer < [link removed] > , our annual Thanksgiving time event for LGBTQ+ youth to come together, celebrate who they are, and find comfort in community. Taking place on Monday, November 25 at 5:00 p.m., Thanks for Being Queer will be a night filled with music, food, and family where youth and young adults ages 13 - 22can experience the holiday season in a safe and affirming space.
