Resist and Reimagine!

Dear FAIR Family,

We’re in the midst of a dark time for those who believe in an independent press, a vibrant democracy and the basic dignity of every human being, regardless of race, gender expression, sexual orientation, immigration status or socioeconomic position. We feel let down by our politicians and disillusioned by the corporate press, who parrot and normalize the far-right’s abusive rhetoric, lacking the courage to call out hatred and disinformation for fear of seeming “biased.”

It’s easy to feel defeated, but our steadfastness is needed more now than ever. Under a fascist president who promised Americans were “not going to have to vote” again if he won, journalists, activists and academics could face backlash for simply speaking the truth.

At FAIR, we pledge to continue our work, to shout truth from the rooftops and fight for democracy, human rights, peace and justice for as long as our small operation exists. The fight for a free press that meets our communities’ information needs and platforms dissenting voices has been ongoing, and we have no plans of stopping anytime soon. But, we have a dire need for resources to carry out this work.

Unfortunately, as we’ve informed you, FAIR remains in the middle of a financial crisis, about $200,000 away from where we need to be to break even. We’re already on a shoestring budget, only spending what we absolutely need to do our basic work and support our small staff. We can’t afford to continue like this much longer without some serious support.

We’re aiming to raise $150,000 this giving season to begin trying to close that gap. We hope you’ll be able to help us.

Nearly four decades of archived work is available for free on our site, alongside educational  toolkits on spotting misinformation, practicing media literacy and organizing in support of a free press. What you won’t find is ads, paywalls or corporate B.S.!

We hope that during this crucial crossroads, you feel invigorated to support this cause. If you are able, please donate today!

In 2024, we focused on Israel’s US-backed genocide in Gaza, the climate crisis, threats to democracy, immigration lies, corporate price-gouging, LGBTQ rights, civil rights and more. Hundreds of articles, analyses, studies and CounterSpin episodes were posted to our site, all thanks to the hardworking FAIR staffers, writers, interns…and YOU!

A recap of some of our favorites this year:

  • ‘Shortsighted’ NYT Publisher Sees Trump’s Danger, But Won’t Use Paper to Fight Him by Julie Hollar
  • Media Owned by Mega-Wealthy Would Rather Not Talk About Inequality by Conor Smyth
  • CounterSpin interview with Free Press’ Joe Torres ‘When Hasn’t Journalism Been in Crisis for Black People?’
  • Assange Is Finally Free—But the Press Is Less Free by Ari Paul
  • Sunday Morning Talkshows Are  tudent-Free Zones on Gaza Protests by Felipe Rendall

2025 will begin with a new Commander-in-Chief, but he is just a symptom of the injustices we’ve been pledging to fight since our founding in 1986. Join our fight to resist war and genocide, threats to bodily autonomy, violations of our First Amendment rights, and all forms of injustice.

Please be as generous as you are able. In turn, we’ll be as outspoken as ever!

Rest assured, with the right resources, this resistance will only get stronger in 2025!

Wishing you and yours a safe and happy holiday season, full of love and hope. As always, thank you for being a part of this movement.

Sincerely,

Your Friends at FAIR: Olivia Riggio, Janine Jackson, Jim Naureckas & Julie Hollar
