Content Warning: This email describes a murder

Hi John,

This is going to be a long, but important email. I hope that you will read
the entire thing.

By now, you have probably heard of Ahmaud Arbery. He was a 25 year old
Black man who went for a jog on February 23rd in Satilla Shores, Georgia
when two white supremacists with deep ties to law enforcement saw him,
grabbed their guns, and murdered him.

It took 74 days for the two killers to finally be arrested and charged
with murder and aggravated assault.

Two County Commissioners in Brunswick, Georgia went on the record to say
that on February 23rd — the day Ahmaud was murdered — police wanted to
make an immediate arrest, and said they found probable cause.

District Attorney Jackie Johnson, who knew the murderer, called them off
before eventually recusing herself from the case. The next district
attorney, George E. Barnhill, argued that the murderers acted in
accordance with Georgia’s self-defense and citizen arrest laws and told
the police that there was no reason to arrest them.

These district attorneys failed Ahmaud in every way imaginable and
actively helped keep two white supremacists out on the streets. This is
just one example of how broken our criminal legal system is. This was an
act of white supremacy, a hate crime, and a murder and yet it took the
police 74 days to arrest the McMichaels.

You’ve heard me say it before and I’ll say it again: District attorneys
are some of the most powerful elected officials who can turn the tide on
systemic racism and oppression in the justice system.

Listen. This is why Real Justice’s work is so important. We’re fighting to
elect transformative district attorneys who will fight for accountability,
who will take hate crimes seriously, and won’t try to cover up acts of
white supremacy.
