Attorney General Paxton Corrects Local Counties on COVID-19 Church Guidance

This week, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sent letters to Travis, Bexar, and Dallas counties in regards to their recent unconstitutional requirements that local leaders in these counties were placing on churches. The Attorney General noted that local leaders in these counties were confusing requirements with recommendations. The Texas Values team had specifically sent a request to the Attorney General’s office encouraging a correction to these erroneous local requirements.

Attorney General Paxton specifically warned the City of Austin and Travis County that they were exposing themselves to legal lability for the violation of the First Amendment and the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Austin and Travis County went as far as to try to force churches to adopt “sexual orientation and gender identity policies” that would violate church’s sincerely held religious beliefs. For more details, we have put together a helpful summary of the Attorney General’s letter to each county.

Join Our Virtual Sex-Ed Sit Out Townhall On Tuesday

Texas Values, along with the Stand Up For Children – ATX coalition, is excited to announce that our previously planned Austin ISD Sex-Ed Sit Out will now take place as a virtual townhall on Tuesday, May 19 at 7 PM. You may have heard the big news that Austin ISD announced the canceling of their radical sex education curriculum that was scheduled to be taught this month. While this is a hard-fought victory for this school year, it is still important for parents, faith leaders, and concerned citizens to be educated and equipped on the dangers of the radical sex education agenda.

This educational townhall will be informative for all Texans, not just those in Austin. You will hear from members of the Texas Values team, Carly Ayala from Concerned Parents of Texas, Austin parent Jennifer Kratky, Pastor Hanoi Avila, and Monica Cline, a former Planned Parenthood sex educator and founder of It Takes A Family. The townhall will be live-streamed on the Texas Values Facebook page. Please RSVP on the event page and share with your family and friends!

San Marcos Sneaks In LGBT Policy

Texas Values is urging San Marcos citizens to oppose a pro-LGBT “sexual orientation and gender identity” (SOGI) policy that was discussed in a closed executive session and then voted on during a Shelter in Place order. This policy would force private businesses, nonprofits and contractors with the City of San Marcos to violate their sincerely held religious beliefs. The policy is set to go into effect today. Texas Values has sent a letter to the Mayor and City Council informing them of the possible Texas Open Meetings Act violation, as well as requesting a public hearing before the implementation of the new controversial policy.

Texas Values Urges Protections For Churches

Texas Values signed onto a letter from First Liberty this week, along with hundreds of religious leaders from across the country, urging Congress to provide immunity for religious organizations from negligence suits resulting from their serving the public or reopening in accordance with local orders. The letter warns of a “new threat to our nation’s faith communities: a swarm of lawsuits blaming houses of worship and religious ministries for any person who attended a religious gathering or received food or shelter from a charity or ministry and subsequently contracted COVID-19.”
