Pittsburgh Public Schools saw a 25% increase in English Language Learner students this year as the district, state and nation face shortages in teachers trained to educate kids who are new to the language.

This year, the district has 53 language teachers and 18 multilingual classroom assistants to teach the district’s 1,800 English learners. But against that, there has been an influx of new students because of refugee resettlements and families moving to the city. Many of those students have no proficiency in English, which has posed challenges for the district’s staff.
