When serious problems for families come to light, Katie listens, learns, and acts quickly to take your experiences and translate them into action.
Katie’s constituent Emily Calandrelli had a harrowing experience bringing breast milk through LAX, so she shared her story of mistreatment by TSA to illuminate a huge issue for traveling parents.
Katie dug in and learned how many parents have had their equipment or milk confiscated and contaminated. Many parents have been interrogated by agents who received no proper training on TSA’s own policies on protecting breastfeeding moms and minimizing potential risks for kids.
After researching how prevalent and unfair this issue is for traveling parents, Katie and her team began drafting the Bottles and Breastfeeding Equipment Screening (BABES) Enhancement Act to update the current law, working with Emily herself!
As of this fall, the BABES Enhancement Act has passed the House Homeland Security Committee and Senate. It just needs to pass the full House before it can be signed into law.
As a single working mom, Katie knows that families rely on government to do its job to address their challenges.
As an elected official, Katie has worked to bring families’ problems to light and solve them.
