Hi John, North Carolina was one of our key electoral priorities this cycle, and one of the most critical races there — for the state supreme court — is now going into a recount. We endorsed Justice Allison Riggs for the North Carolina Supreme Court because she has proven to be a fair-minded and independent voice on the court. She is a tenacious civil rights attorney who has been a champion of every American’s fundamental rights, including voting rights. She leads her opponent by just over 700 votes — out of more than 5.5 million total ballots cast. We knew that major state-level races this year could come down to just a few hundred votes, so everything this team does can make a real difference. And this is an important reminder that our work fighting for a fair democracy is far from over. In fact, given the extreme MAGA Republicans who will be leading the federal government, our work at the state level is more important than ever before. The NDRC is supporting count and cure campaigns on the ground in North Carolina while also gearing up for the next phase of our 10 Year Plan.
The Republican majority on the North Carolina Supreme Court has already had a massive impact on the state: The court removed constitutional guardrails on extreme partisan gerrymandering, brought back a voter ID law, and disenfranchised people with felony convictions. Justice Allison Riggs’s reelection will ensure that critical pro-democracy leadership remains a force on this massively influential court — and we’ll avoid adding yet another extreme partisan voice to the court. We need to do everything we can to get pro-democracy candidates in seats at the state level, to hold the line against extreme Republicans and their Project 2025 policies. We may be down, but we’re certainly not out. Are you with us? Thanks so much — we’ll keep you updated on this one. Team NDRC
