Transgender Day of Remembrance
John,
We must actively stand together and stand up for the rights and safety of transgender people everywhere. Today and every day, let's celebrate, uplift and honor our transgender community as we work to build a free, equal, and just world. Oregonians have made it clear that we believe in these values. And at this time of uncertainty on the national stage, we should continue to do everything we can to make Oregon a safe haven for our transgender siblings.
Transgender Day of Remembrance was established to draw attention to the challenges and violence transgender people face, and to remember those who have lost their lives to acts of hate and violence. Today, we hold vigil for those who have passed, and we reaffirm our commitment to defending the rights and freedoms of those who we are grateful to have with us, and future generations who might draw strength from what we do today.
In defense of the freedom to be who you are without fear. In remembrance of those brave souls who have suffered violence. And with fierce determination to make this world a just place for transgender people now and for future generations, we at the Democratic Party of Oregon and the DPO Stonewall Caucus say this: We see you. We love you. We remember you. And we will never back down from our charge to do all we can in support of and solidarity with you.

And we will remember these words:
“Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice.”
