Dear Friends, President Biden has said in the past that he wants to close the detention center at Guantánamo Bay. In his last days in office, of the 30 men detained, he can transfer the 16 men who are already cleared for transfer from the prison. Join us in calling on the Administration to take action before the end of this term to transfer these men to countries that will respect their human rights >> Write to President Biden today. Continuing to hold people indefinitely without charge or trial compounds the abuses and torture that have taken place at the military detention center at Guantánamo. The detention center is a moral stain on this country that must be shuttered. These next few weeks are the last chance the Biden Administration has to fulfill its pledge to work toward a lawful solution for the men still held at Guantanamo. Please share this Action Alert and ask members of your community, family and friends to contact the President now. Sincerely, Rev. Ron Stief Executive Director P.S. - You may have seen recent news that Secretary of Defense Austin is attempting to block plea agreements with three of the men in the 9/11 case who are still being held at Guantanamo. For more background on the current status of these plea deals, which are the only practical way forward to eventually close Guantanamo, see this Just Security article by Scott Roehm and Ian Moss. I also encourage you to read an op-ed written this week by a family member of a 9/11 victim: "My father died on 9/11. Here’s why I support plea deals for the plotters" by Chanel Shum of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. | |
