John,
Later today, the Senate will vote on Bernie Sanders’ joint resolutions to suspend offensive weapons aid to the Israeli government. I’m encouraging my Senate colleagues to support these resolutions.
I have been deeply alarmed by the Israeli military’s conduct in Gaza, where independent human rights monitors have documented the use of U.S.-provided weaponry in violations of international law.
I believe the U.S. should use all available leverage, including the suspension of offensive weapons transfers, to de-escalate the violence and protect the lives of hostages, including Americans, Palestinian civilians, and all those impacted by the ongoing conflict. I believe we must do this while continuing to condemn the tragic killing and hostage-taking during Hamas’ brutal October 7th attacks and advocate for a ceasefire that ensures the safe return of all hostages.
According to a report from the Biden administration, “it is reasonable to assess” that Israeli forces have used weapons supplied by the United States in violation of international law. And Donald Trump’s return to the White House will only embolden Netanyahu and his far-right ministers.
That’s why I am urging Senators today to support these joint resolutions to block specific offensive arms sales to Israel, which upholds U.S. law that prohibits arms transfers to countries that engage in a consistent pattern of gross violations of internationally recognized human rights or restrict the delivery of U.S. humanitarian assistance.
There are some who will criticize this vote, stating it harms our ability to combat terrorists. I disagree. You do not effectively combat terrorism by starving innocent children, bombing hospitals, and blocking humanitarian aid. That’s what this vote is about.
We must do everything we can to safeguard civilian lives, secure a lasting ceasefire, and advance a pathway toward peace.
In solidarity,
Pramila Jayapal
