Full Fact has launched its government policy tracker to assess how the government are getting on implementing their manifesto
Dear Friend

A secret obsession of Full Fact is data. We love looking at a spreadsheet and devising ways to get to the truth of what it shows.

So when a member of our team suggested churning through a lot of data about the current government's policies we were at first very excited and then quite determined.

What has come from this is our Government Tracker, our attempt to take all that information and give our subscribers (and the public at large) a way to see how the government is doing, based on the promises set out in Labour’s manifesto during the 2024 general election.

Government Tracker
We’re starting small as we want to spend time making sure we produce high quality information and upholding our standards of precision and impartiality as we go through each of the party’s pledges.

Watch this space …

Best wishes,

Craig, Digital Campaigns Manager - Full Fact

P.S - We're branching out on social media with a newly revitalised account on BlueSky. For those of you who haven't used it before it's very similar to X (formerly Twitter).
HOW IT WORKS
Full Fact has initially looked at 43 pledges Labour made in its manifesto during the 2024 general election. We've then compared this to the government's record in power to see how they're getting on.

We've assigned each of these pledges one of seven ratings:

  • Achieved

  • Appears on track

  • In progress

  • Appears off track

  • Not kept

  • Unclear or disputed

  • Wait and see...

Pledge

“Labour will not increase taxes on working people, which is why we will not increase National Insurance”
Labour manifesto, page 21

Our verdict

Labour increased employers’ National Insurance contributions in its Autumn 2024 Budget. But as its manifesto failed to offer a clear definition of what its pledge on National Insurance meant, whether the pledge has been kept or broken is unclear and disputed.

Our verdict

It’s too early to say what progress has been made on this pledge—we don’t yet have data on how the use of hotels to house asylum seekers has changed since Labour came into government.
