Among the many passages of breathtaking beauty in Paradise Lost is Milton's
description of Adam seeing Eve for the first time after the Fall. They had
separated for the day to complete their happy labors in the Garden, where Satan
found and deceived Eve. Adam, blissfully unaware, had prepared a garland of
roses to present to his bride upon their reunification.
When she appeared, he immediately knew disaster had struck:
From his slack hand the garland wreathed for Eve
Down dropped, and all the faded roses shed
Imagine this scene of heartbreak! Imagine the feeling of all the world coming
