Dear John,

On this Trans Day of Remembrance, I’m honoring the countless Americans who have lost their lives to violence and discrimination because of their gender identity. This is a day for us to remember the courage and resilience it takes to live openly as a trans or nonbinary person. We have an obligation to push back against cruelty, violence, and discrimination.

History has shown us time and time again – when we make progress, there will always be backlash. That’s why we need to be clear about protecting everyone’s inherent dignity. When we allow attacks on someone’s basic human dignity, we are all made more cruel. We compromise ourselves.

As the first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent Vermont in Congress, know that I’m here standing up for all Vermonters, including trans Americans who are scared right now. I will continue the work to protect our rights, dignity, and humanity.

The progress we’ve fought for, from access to health care to civil rights, must be strengthened and defended. I’m fired up and ready to continue the fight for justice, equality, and safety for everyone in our community.

Every American, regardless of their identity or background should be able to live as their authentic selves without fear or threat of violence. Today, as we remember those we’ve lost, let’s also honor their memory with action, organizing, and a commitment to protecting and uplifting everyone.
