Dear Friend, |
In 2018, New Fortress Energy, through its Puerto Rico-based subsidiary NFEnergía, began designing a terminal in San Juan Harbor to import liquefied methane gas (LMG) without approval from the Federal Regulatory Energy Commission (FERC). This violated federal law. |
By doing so, NFEnergía evaded the typical process where FERC would assess the health, environmental, and public safety risks of gas and oil projects before they begin operating and inform the public so they can engage in any approval process. |
We asked the public to demand FERC take steps to ensure public participation in review of the LMG Terminal. Over 22,000 Earthjustice advocates heeded the call and flooded the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) with comments demanding in person public hearings on NFEnergía’s illegal Liquefied Methane Gas (LMG) export terminal in San Juan Harbor. |
The public pressure worked! FERC scheduled in-person meetings in San Juan and the Commission took comments from each attendee with a Spanish translator present so folks can speak in the language they’re most comfortable with. These are all asks that advocates like you called for. |
Thank you for making sure Puerto Rican voices are heard. Community members gave firsthand accounts of the air pollution, noise pollution, traffic, and safety risks that they have been forced to endure. |
Now, you also have an opportunity to share your voice again. FERC is accepting written comments until November 25th where you can tell the Commission to account for all of the harms that have been forced on surrounding communities for the last four years. |
You can also urge the Commission to examine the true climate impacts of the LMG Terminal, by comparing lifecycle emissions from LMG to zero-emissions clean energy from more affordable, more resilient rooftop solar and storage systems. NFEnergía is interfering with Puerto Rico’s clean energy transition — FERC has the power to stop them! |
Tell FERC to fully consider all the impacts of this terminal since its construction and its impact on San Juan Harbor and its surrounding neighborhoods. |
|
Sincerely,
Raghu Murthy
