Dear SPUC supporter,

It is now just nine days until MPs will debate Kim Leadbeater’s assisted suicide bill.

More and more MPs are waking up to the dangers of this bill. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson have joined the ranks of Cabinet members indicating they will vote against.

However, we cannot be complacent. Dignity in Dying are pouring huge amounts of money into this campaign, with ads on the London Underground and in the newspapers. Their allies, Humanists UK, have been launching media attacks on the campaign groups opposing the bill.

We need to keep telling MPs how dangerous this bill is. Crucially, it must be voted down at second reading on the 29th, and not allowed to progress further. Since 2010, of the 219 private members bills that passed second reading, only one was voted down at third reading. The 29th is the key date.

Thank you to everyone who has already written to their MP. If you haven’t yet done so, please contact your MP now. I cannot emphasise enough how crucial this is. The numbers are incredibly close, and every vote counts.

Demo on the day

Many of you have been asking about a demonstration on the 29th, while the bill is being debated. Not Dead Yet, the campaign group representing disabled people against assisted suicide, will be heading up a demonstration outside Parliament on the day. The plan is to begin as early as possible (about 8:30am) to catch MPs coming into Parliament and to continue during the debate (expected to end about 2:30). T-shirts and placards will be provided. Keep an eye on Not Dead Yet UK and their social media channels for further updates.

Thank you for all you are doing to combat this bill and to protect the most vulnerable.
With best wishes
