Hi John —
Like most of us, you’re probably still processing the election results — searching for answers, supporting your friends and loved ones, and making plans to keep fighting and moving forward.
We are right there with you. It’s incredibly difficult and painful to accept that Donald Trump has once again been elected as president of the United States, knowing what he and his extreme MAGA agenda will attempt to do to our fundamental freedoms. There are going to be difficult fights ahead, and we must not waver.
But know this, John, all is not lost. Our movement for fair maps won some key victories — and more races are still yet to be called. We are continuing to lay the groundwork for fair representation and the election of leaders who will defend, not undermine, our democracy.
Here’s what we know so far about some critical races for state legislatures and state supreme courts:
* At least 92 of the NDRC’s Democracy Defenders have already won their elections — and other races have not yet been decided as votes continue to be counted. These candidates have fought and won important victories that will help create and defend fair electoral maps for future elections. We congratulate them on their wins and thank all of the NDRC supporters like you who helped propel them to victory.
* With new fair legislative maps in Wisconsin, Democracy Defenders broke a Republican supermajority in the state senate and flipped seats in the state assembly, creating a path to win majorities in 2026.
* In Alabama, a newly fair map helped enable the election of two Black Congress members, Shomari Figures and Terri Sewell, for the first time in history, and they will truly reflect the political desires of Alabamians. As former Attorney General Eric Holder said, “It is because of the heroism of previous generations that a tenacious group of Black Alabama voters challenged the State of Alabama in court to enforce protections enshrined in the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and took that fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court — and won.”
* In Michigan, two pro-democracy candidates defeated ideological extremists to win seats on the state supreme court — Kyra Harris Bolden and Kimberly Ann Thomas will both play key roles in defending a fair electoral system in this critical battleground state. A.G. Holder celebrated this outcome, declaring that “Michigan will have independent and fair-minded state supreme court justices who will protect their most cherished freedoms.”
* And in other battleground states, Democracy Defenders flipped key seats blue — like Floyd Griffin, who was elected to Georgia’s state house, and Patty Kim , who won a state senate seat in Pennsylvania.
We’re working to analyze the results and implications of the elections, but no matter what, we know that we’ll remain ready for the next round of fights for fair maps and the candidates who support them.
Thank you for making these state-level victories possible, and for the work we will do together in the months and years ahead.
Much more to come,
The National Democratic Redistricting Committee
