We need you to take urgent action today, John.
This week, the U.S. House will vote on HR 9495, a bill that would give the incoming Trump administration the unprecedented power to silence organizations it doesn’t like by revoking their nonprofit status and shutting them down.
If passed, this dangerous bill would be an absolute disaster for our progressive movement as a whole, plus it would have a chilling effect on our ability to fight for climate justice and oppose hazardous fossil fuel projects.
This bill was ostensibly created to “root out terrorism” in the nonprofit sector (read: stifle nonprofits that support Palestinian human rights). It’s now grown into a tool that the incoming Trump White House could use to shut down ANY nonprofit organization — like 350.org — that says or does anything Trump and his MAGA cabinet don’t like.
They could revoke an organization’s nonprofit status, investigate, or even deem it a “terrorist supporting organization” with zero proof or due process to quash dissent.
Not only was this bill born out of Islamophobia, but its further purpose is to make organizations like ours — movement groups that loudly oppose bigotry, oppressive structures, and the fossil fuel industry — either be silent or be classified out of existence.
Our movement will be more important than ever in countering the far-right authoritarianism of the incoming Trump administration and GOP-controlled Congress, and holding governments accountable to acting on climate. The next four years will be crucial in resisting the MAGA agenda and fighting climate change — we simply can’t afford to be silenced.
Thank you for standing with us and fighting back against this dangerous attack on our freedom of speech and right to organize.
Together,
JL Andrepont
