John,

I’m writing you a quick note from D.C. — it’s new member orientation for Congressmembers-elect!

Like you, I’m still heartbroken by the national election results. Like you, I’m extremely concerned by many of the initial announcements from the incoming Trump administration and what it means for healthcare, human rights, and keeping our neighbors safe. Getting to know my amazing new colleagues, walking past the U.S. Capitol, and spending time in places like the Library of Congress have reminded me how vital this work is and how much we have to fight for.

A few items:

• It feels a lot like the first day of school — I shared some thoughts on TikTok [[link removed]] as I got ready for one of our marathon orientation days.

• I’m especially proud to share this photo with Congresswomen-elect Sarah McBride (D-DE) and Julie Johnson (D-TX) [[link removed]] . All of us just made history. Sarah is the first trans woman elected to Congress, and Julie is the first LGBTQ+ member of Congress elected from the South. I loved meeting them and can’t wait to get to work to defend ALL of our rights from the Trump administration.

• I also attended orientation for the New Democrats Caucus [[link removed]] , a group of pragmatic Democrats focused on working across party and ideological lines to deliver results for our constituents. I’m one of 23 new members of the caucus.

• The election isn’t over! In a handful of House races, especially in California, they are either still counting votes or expecting a recount. I’ll continue to pass on information about how to volunteer [[link removed]] or donate [[link removed]] to support those efforts. Even if Republicans retain control of the House, how narrow their majority is will impact what they can pass without defections.

Thank you for your continued engagement and support. Please follow me on Facebook [[link removed]] , Instagram [[link removed]] , and TikTok [[link removed]] for more updates.
