Social movements have pushed the United States to live up to its ideals of freedom and equality time and time again. We come together to make this country better for all, which is why dissent is patriotic. But this week, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on a bill that would hand Donald Trump authoritarian powers to silence dissent.

Known as the “Non-profit Killer” bill, HR 9495 would give Trump’s Treasury Secretary the ability to strip any non-profit organization of its tax-exempt status by labeling them as “terrorist-affiliated,” without any evidence or opportunity for the organization to respond. This is the first step in enabling Trump to attack those who he perceives as political enemies. If signed into law it would be disastrous for our social movements, our right to free speech, and our democracy.

The first time this bill came up in the House last week, it failed because it needed a 2/3 majority to pass. However, now House Republicans are bringing it up again this week for another vote, which only needs a simple majority (over 50%) to pass. We urgently need every Democrat to stand in opposition now.

Add your name to demand Congresspeople vote against HR 9495, which would allow Trump to target any non-profit organization that opposes his racist, inhumane agenda.

Trump said repeatedly on the campaign trail that he would target his political opponents if elected. Just as he plans to dismantle aspects of the federal government like the Department of Education, he will use his executive powers to go after political rivals and groups that he doesn’t like.

Take a stand against Trump’s mass deportation policy? He’ll label you as a terrorist.

Opposed to U.S. tax dollars supporting war crimes? He’ll label you as a terrorist.

Don’t want Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” to cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid? Trump will label you as a terrorist.

In order to get to the world we deserve, we need progressive groups to keep fighting and win. Each month we give you the opportunity to support impactful non-profit organizations doing important work in our communities, from defending our rights to bringing about social justice to providing humanitarian aid and more.

Any one of these groups could be in jeopardy of losing their non-profit status if Trump’s Treasury Department is given unilateral authority to label them as “terrorist-affiliated.”
