Hi Friend,

Animal Outlook’s investigation into Jannat Farm, a Tyson-contracted facility in Virginia, uncovered widespread and systemic cruelty to a flock of 150,000 birds, from their early days as chicks until they were taken away for slaughter.

Today, I’m thrilled to share a major development: thanks to your unwavering support and the evidence gathered in our investigation, the owner of Jannat Farm has pleaded guilty to two charges of animal cruelty. This follows the manager’s guilty plea to three counts of animal cruelty. Both individuals received 12-month suspended sentences and are prohibited from working with animals during this time. Jannat Farm closed down after our investigation. However, if the owner resumes operations in the future, he will be subject to unannounced inspections.

Our undercover investigator documented horrifying abuses, including:
  • Violence against birds: Workers were caught on camera throwing and kicking chickens. One “chicken catcher” gruesomely ripped the head off a bird, while the manager killed birds by repeatedly yanking their heads.
  • Neglect of illness and injuries: Birds with severe injuries, deformities, or illnesses were left to suffer. Footage revealed a chick with an exposed skull and a severely injured eye, still alive and standing.
  • Deprivation of food and water: Water lines were inaccessible to many birds, food ran out for up to 52 hours due to Tyson’s delays, and at other times bugs were found in food.
  • Filthy and hazardous conditions: Rat activity and corpses were rampant, while decaying chickens were left in and around food trays.
A pivotal aspect of this case is that the owner and manager pled "guilty"—rather than “no contest”—acknowledging their responsibility for the cruelty that occurred under their watch. Importantly, accountability extended to those in charge, instead of low-level workers. This marks a significant step toward holding the animal agriculture industry accountable for its systemic abuse.

None of this progress would have been possible without your compassion and dedication. Thank you for standing with us and for advocating for animals by leaving them off your plate.

With gratitude,
Ben Williamson
