Dear Friend,

While states across the country have introduced and implemented anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, I am proud to say that here in Michigan, we’re fighting to protect equal rights. We believe that every person, no matter who they love or how they identify, deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported.

I want LGBTQ+ Michiganders to know that I see you, I’ve got your back, and I’ll never stop fighting for your right to live as your full authentic self, right here in Michigan.

This issue is personal for me, and my administration will keep taking action to build a Michigan for all. We know that bigotry is bad for business. Talented young workers want to live in states that stand for everyone’s freedom and leading companies are seeking to expand in places that will empower their workers to make their own choices about their lives and futures. We will build on our reputation as a welcoming state where you can live a great life at a good cost of living and scale your business.

I’m excited to share the progress we’ve made to protect every Michigander.

Sincerely,

Protecting LGBTQ+ Michiganders

Over the last few years, we’ve taken big steps to protect LGBTQ+ rights. I was proud to sign legislation that expanded the Elliot-Larson Civil Rights Act [ [link removed]. ] to include sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. This ensures that no one can be fired from their job or  evicted from their home because of who they are or how they identify.

We’re protecting our LGBTQ+ youth as well. Thanks to my partners in the Michigan Legislature, I signed legislation that bans the horrific practice of conversion therapy [ [link removed] ], taking another big step in making Michigan a more welcoming and inclusive place.

Earlier this year, I signed the Michigan Family Protection Act [ [link removed] ] which This act also ensures that LGBTQ+ families are treated equally when starting a family by eliminating the need to go through a costly and invasive process confirming their parental status. Even if they move to a state that does not respect these basic rights, this legislation helps ensure that they cannot be denied their relationship with their child.

*LGBTQ+ Commission*

During Motor City Pride last year, I signed an executive order [ [link removed] ] to establish the first-ever Michigan LGBTQ+ Commission, focused on protecting the health, safety, and well-being of Michigan’s LGBTQ+ community; promoting LGBTQ+ culture, history, and economic contributions to Michigan; and looking for ways to attract potential future Michigan residents who are members of the community.

Over the past year, the commission has been laser-focused on working to support policies and initiatives that reflect the needs and aspirations of LGBTQ+ Michiganders, often through open public meetings and listening sessions.

For more information on what the LGBTQ+ Commission is up to, please visit their website [ [link removed] ] or contact them at [email protected].

Should you need any support at this time, I encourage you to consult the State of Michigan’s LGBTQ+ resources for caseworkers, youth, and family [ [link removed] ].

Here in Michigan, we will continue to fight for the equality, dignity, and fundamental freedom of every .
