Attempted Murder Suspect Arrested In Downtown Los Angeles After Pursuit

Los Angeles Police Department officers arrested a man allegedly wanted for attempted murder in downtown Los Angeles at the end of an early morning pursuit. The pursuit began in the Wilshire District at 4:34 a.m. and officers pursued the suspect into downtown Los Angeles before they detained him near Casey's Irish Pub at 613 Grand Ave., LAPD Officer Rosario Cervantes told City News Service. The pursuit temporarily blocked several downtown intersections, with many of them opening shortly after the arrest was made at 4:48 a.m.

LAPD Asking For Help Identifying Vehicle In Deadly Hit-and-Run Crash

Detectives need help identifying the vehicle that struck and killed a 42-year-old bicyclist in South Los Angeles. The deadly hit-and-run crash happened on Oct. 27 at 9:55 p.m. near the intersection of Normandie Avenue and 23rd Street. The victim, 42-year-old Oscar Guardado, was riding his bike home when the vehicle struck him, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The driver fled the crash site and did not render aid to Guardado. The Los Angeles Fire Department declared Guardado dead when they arrived. A witness described the suspect's vehicle as a black four-door sedan. After canvassing the area, detectives could not track down any other leads or videos of the crash. However, the videos they obtained showed that there were more witnesses to the collision. Investigators urged witnesses or anyone with information on the case to contact Sergeant Garbiel Nily of the South Traffic Division at (323) 421-2500. The department asked everyone to please contact the South Traffic Division Watch Commander outside of business hours at (323) 421-2577.

Body Found In Car In Los Angeles Prompts ‘Natural Death’ Investigation

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating what they call a “natural death” after a dead body was found in a car late Sunday night. An LAPD spokesperson confirmed to KTLA that officers were responding to reports of a dead body found inside a vehicle on Hauser Boulevard in the West Adams neighborhood at 11:54 p.m. A later update from LAPD Officer Cervantes indicated the death was determined to be “natural” and that a homicide investigation was not being conducted. Video from the scene shows a white Toyota SUV with a banner of some sort covering the windshield. A man was also seen talking to detectives, although his connection to the incident is unclear. Officers later removed what was covering the windshield and were seen pushing what appeared to be the dead body on a stretcher. No other details – including the decedent’s identity – were released.

Los Angeles Authorities Searching For Girl Who Left For School But Never Arrived 

Police and the family of a young girl who left for school but never arrived last week are turning to the public for help in locating her. According to a Los Angeles Police Department missing juvenile bulletin, 14-year-old Promise Harvey was last seen heading to school near the 300 block of 88th Place in South Los Angeles on the morning of Nov. 14. She was reported missing by her family the following morning at 6 a.m. after it was discovered that she never made it to school. While it was not disclosed which exact school Promise attended, the 300 block of 88th Place is adjacent to the campuses of Watts Learning Center Middle School and Mervyn M. Dymally High School. Promise is described as standing 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 110 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes, and was last seen wearing a pink shirt, tan pants and black and blue shoes. Anyone who has seen Promise or has any information regarding her whereabouts is urged to contact the LAPD’s Missing Persons Unit by calling 213-996-1800. Police Seek Help Locating Suspected Hit-and-Run Driver

Police sought the public’s assistance Monday in locating the hit-and-run suspect responsible for severely injuring a 71-year-old man in Encino. A white vehicle traveling eastbound on Ventura Boulevard near Libbit Avenue at high speed around 9 p.m. Saturday collided with another vehicle heading northbound on Ventura Boulevard, exiting from a driveway, causing the car to veer to the left before hitting a pedestrian crossing the street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The man was flung and landed on westbound traffic on Ventura Boulevard, where the vehicle heading northbound on Ventura Boulevard remained at the scene. The other vehicle traveling eastbound on Ventura Boulevard continued without stopping to render aid. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took the victim to a hospital with serious injuries. Investigators described the suspect’s vehicle as a four-door Nissan Altima with a driver-side door mirror missing, collision damage to the front right headlamp, and possible damage to the front right and rear passenger doors. A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered by the city for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the suspect.

Man Sentenced To Life For Murdering His Child's Mother Outside Hawthorne Police Station

An ex-con who was found guilty of murdering the mother of his child during a custody exchange outside the Hawthorne police station was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Jacob Ryan Munn, 36, of Hawthorne was also given 29-years-to- life in prison. Munn was convicted Oct. 29 of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, with jurors also finding true the special circumstance allegation of murder while lying in wait. Authorities said Munn left the child, who was then about 1 1/2 years old, inside the police station and then shot and killed his 28-year-old ex-girlfriend, Brenda Renteria, as she approached the door on April 7, 2019. "One of our officers was inside and rushed outside when he heard the gunfire," then-Lt. Gary Tomatani told City News Service shortly after the shooting. "Witnesses told the officer that the man who shot the woman was fleeing the scene. That's when an officer-involved shooting took place."

Southern California Man Convicted Of Shooting Into Home, Paralyzing 7-Year-Old Girl

A 27-year-old Oxnard man has been found guilty of a 2019 shooting that injured a pregnant mother and paralyzed her 7-year-old daughter, officials announced Monday. According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, on July 2, 2019, Jaylin Edwards and another man who was 17 at the time shot at a home in Port Hueneme where they believed a man they were looking for lived. However, inside the home lived a family of five, who officials say were sitting in their living room at the time. An investigation revealed that at least 8 of the 12 gunshots fired hit the home, three of which struck the family members inside. The 7-year-old girl was shot in the head, officials confirmed, and her pregnant mother was hit twice – once in her foot and once in her thigh. Police later identified the daughter as Kaylanaa Davis, and the mother as Maryam Davis. Kaylanaa was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and later airlifted to Los Angeles Children’s Hospital where officials say she spent three weeks in a coma. After three months in the hospital, authorities report Kaylanaa returned home – but the young girl was left paralyzed on the left side of her body and has permanent cognitive impairment.

Southern California Kids Execute Sting Operation To Catch A Suspected Predator

Move over, Chris Hansen — 20 Southern California juveniles just executed a string operation that netted a suspected child predator. Riverside County sheriff’s deputies responded to a tip Friday that an adult was meeting a minor for sex at Nicolas Road Park in Temecula, according to a release. When they got there at around 4:25 p.m., a crowd of 20 minors was filming suspect William Vandenbush, 46, of Homeland. Authorities did not say how old the minors were, how exactly they organized the sting or how they previously encountered Vandenbush. Still, an investigation by law enforcement confirmed that Vandenbush had sent nude photos and agreed to meet a minor at the park for sexual purposes, and he was arrested on several felony charges. It’s not clear if the junior detectives were inspired by Hansen’s NBC television series, “To Catch a Predator,” in which suspected sexual predators are caught on hidden cameras arriving at a sting house to have sex with a minor. The department cautioned against vigilante efforts to meet with or investigate potential suspects. The department said in a release that it is not only unsafe but can complicate an investigation if evidence is handled poorly.

Video: Ohio Officer Pulls Man From Flaming Truck After Crash

Columbus police officers are being praised for their heroic actions after rescuing a man trapped in a burning pickup, WSYX reported. The incident began when the truck driver, identified as Randy, called 911 reporting that his brakes had failed, causing him to crash into a highway pillar, according to the report. Moments later, the truck caught fire. In a dramatic six-minute 911 call, Randy can be heard crying for help and asking the dispatcher to tell his wife he loved her, fearing he would not survive. “Tell my wife I love her, please tell my wife I love her,” said Randy. N.H. fire, EMS and police chiefs work to remove mental health stigmas. However, officers arrived within moments, and bodycam footage captured Officer Gloria West running toward the flames. “I am not going to leave him in there,” West can be heard saying on bodycam to her fellow officers. West, who has been with the department for about a year, pulled Randy from the burning vehicle with the help of other officers, according to the report. Officers immediately began medical treatment, removing his smoldering clothing and rendering aid. The victim was transported to a hospital, where he remains in intensive care in fair condition. Officer West suffered minor burns but is expected to recover, according to the report.

Multiple E. Coli Infections Over 18 States, 1 Death Linked To Organic Carrots

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a warning of a deadly E. coli outbreak linked to carrots. A total of 39 people have been infected with E. coli in over 18 states. Nearly 15 people have been hospitalized and one person died, according to the CDC. Officials said organic whole and baby carrots sold by Grimmway Farms are linked to the outbreak. Grimmway Farms recalled the implicated carrots. Multiple brands and sizes of bagged organic whole and baby carrots were recalled. Illnesses have been reported in Washington, Oregon, California, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas, Minesota, Missouri, Arkansas, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. According to the CDC, most people infected experience “severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting.” The symptoms usually start about three or four days after consumption. LA Council Set To Pass `Sanctuary City' Ordinance

The City Council Tuesday is set to adopt a "sanctuary city" ordinance that would officially prohibit any city resources or personnel from being used to help federal enforcement of immigration laws. Last week, City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto, in partnership with Mayor Karen Bass, released the draft ordinance, making it public for the first time after it was called for more than a year ago. Council members Hugo Soto-Martinez and Monica Rodriguez, who chair the council's Civil Rights and Public Safety committees, respectively, waived the matter from their jurisdictions, expediting a vote on the issue by full council. Tuesday's vote will come two weeks to the day after Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election following a campaign in which he stressed border security and promised to deport people who are in the U.S. illegally. When the council approves the sanctuary ordinance -- which it surely will -- it would set up a likely battle with the incoming Trump administration.
