We need to stop this dangerous bill

Friend,

There’s very little time: If the House advances this bill — as soon as tomorrow — it could be catastrophic for Free Press Action and every nonprofit in the country. Please sign our petition right away.

Thank you,

Heather and the rest of us at Free Press Action

Friend,

Last week, I wrote to you with a glimmer of hope … this week, I’m writing to you to tell you that we need to keep fighting.

When we celebrated our defeat of HR 9495 — the misleadingly named “Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act” — congressional leadership was already plotting to bring it back. And this week, the House could pass this bill, which would allow the executive branch to baselessly designate any nonprofit as a “terrorist supporting organization.”

No matter how many times they revive this power grab, we’ll be there to oppose it: Sign our petition demanding that Congress reject this bad bill, which would grant the Trump administration the ability to easily crush dissent. *One click on the link or button will instantly add your name to our petition if we have your details on file.*

To Members of Congress:

HR 9495, the “Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act,” violates due process and would enable the political targeting of nonprofits. The passage of this bill would give the executive branch dangerous new powers, with grave consequences for civil society, including nonprofit newsrooms.

We urge you to reject HR 9495.

The passage of HR 9495 would have a severe chilling effect on nonprofits like Free Press Action as we confront the dangers of a second Trump term — never mind the impact on nonprofit newsrooms around the country that might try to hold him accountable. Trump hasn’t even been sworn in yet and his cronies in Congress are already trying to give him additional unchecked power. We must protect our most basic civil liberties and rights to dissenting speech from this authoritarian scheme.

In solidarity,

Jenna and all of us at Free Press Action
