Leadership

Greetings readers,

As our community grapples with the implications of a second Trump presidency, the ground is already moving beneath our feet. Today’s Leadership newsletter begins with a look at a bill that would give the US secretary of the treasury the power to strip nonprofits of their tax-exempt status if unilaterally deemed to be a “terrorist-supporting” organization, which was defeated by House Democrats. This week, the bill is back to the US House of Representatives for a full vote. We then hear from NPQ’s Rebekah Barber about how Black women are contextualizing the election. Next, we explore the timely question of how nonprofits can navigate political engagement while maintaining public trust. Finally, we invite you to attend our upcoming webinar on November 20, “Remaking the Economy: Liberating Finance to Build a More Just World.”

As ever, the Leadership desk loves to hear from our readers and we’re always looking for pitches and article ideas. Email [email protected]—and/or find me on Bluesky, where I’m newly active, @isaiahthompson.bsky.social.

Best regards,

Isaiah Thompson, Leadership Editor, NPQ

Remaking the Economy: Liberating Finance to Build a More Just World

What does the term “just transition” mean? How can finance truly be liberated from traditional business assumptions and instead be mobilized to support a just transition to an economy rooted in values of solidarity? Those questions were at the heart of an economic justice article series coproduced this summer by NPQ and Justice Funders. Drawing on the contributions from many of the authors in that series, and featuring a lineup of expert panelists, this 90-minute complementary webinar will offer a conversation on the joys and challenges, the dos and don’ts, of putting liberatory finance and investment into action. Join us on November 20 at 2:00 pm ET. Register for the webinar here…
