It happened fast in 2017, ACLU Supporter. Just one week after President Trump took office, he signed an executive order that changed everything: the Muslim ban. Chaos erupted overnight. Families were torn apart, and people were stranded in airports, unsure if they'd ever step foot on U.S. soil again. But within just 24 hours, the ACLU filed lawsuits that stopped the deportations cold. Lawyers rushed to airports to provide legal assistance. Protests spontaneously formed at airports and courthouses. Strangers wept and cheered together as families were reunited, all because people like you stood with us and empowered us to act fast. That was only the beginning. During Trump's first term, the ACLU fought in ways that defined a generation. When migrant children were ripped from their parents at the border, we took the administration to court – and won, reuniting over 2,000 families. When Trump tried to suppress protests in the wake of George Floyd's murder, we stood up for the rights of demonstrators nationwide, defending their right to speak out and demand justice. And when they tried to strip away voting rights, we went state by state to stop voter suppression, protecting millions of people's access to the ballot box. When it came to protecting civil rights and civil liberties during the last Trump administration, no one acted faster or more decisively than the ACLU. Now that we're facing this reality again, we're ready to lead the charge once more. A big reason why we could fight so many attacks on civil rights and civil liberties during President Trump's first term – we filed more than 430 legal actions in total – was because of the incredible outpouring of support we received from people like you, ACLU Supporter. Millions of people signed up to become ACLU supporters during those four years, and they ensured our organization was fit to fight. They're the reason we could not only halt the Muslim ban but also stop family separation at the border, defend the right to protest, and protect the right to vote. We don't know what will come over the next four years, but we do know that we'll need your support to stop it. Thank you,
