It's road safety week - let's look after each other on the roads
road safety
Every year, more than 1700 people die on UK roads.

Another 30,000 receive serious, life-changing injuries.

Each time you set off on a trip, especially if you are driving a car, it is *your responsibility* to drive considerately and carefully, putting the safety of more vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists ahead of your convenience.

* If you haven't already, familiarise yourself with the Highway Code's hierarchy of road users [ [link removed] ]and remember that you should stop to let pedestrians and cyclists safely cross if they are waiting
* A few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death. The faster someone drives, the less time they have to stop if something unexpected happens.

If you kill someone while speeding, you will have to live with the long-term emotional consequences. Speed limits are there for a reason. [ [link removed] ]

Free cards help with scouting around!
Scouts

Local scouts were able to race around Nottingham during a Monopoly-inspired challenge thanks to a donation of 130 free travelcards.

The Robin Hood Operator’s Group donated the travel passes to the 1st Chilwell and Attenborough Scout Group to help Explorers, Scouts and Cubs join the second annual "Oligopoly" event.

Based loosely on the famous board game Monopoly, this version sees them moving around the city visiting different sites and earning points for each location they land at. Additional challenges during gametime can land extra rewards.

Improvements in Bilborough and Leen Valley ??
bike

Nottingham City Council has completed a £5.7m project to make a busy area in Bilborough and Leen Valley safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The council successfully bid for money from the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund to make improvements along Beechdale Road and Hollington Road. £590k was also contributed by Sustrans.

Work started in July 2023 and the project included:

* Creating more space for a cycle lane by removing the central reservation, allowing residents to turn left or right out of their drives where previously they could only turn one way

* replacing existing cycle lanes with two new segregated routes on Beechdale Road and Hollington Road

* improvements to junctions and pedestrian crossing facilities

* resurfacing roads and pavements to give a safer smooth surface for road users and pedestrians

Work under way to make bus services better
Bus services

Nottingham City Council is currently undertaking two projects in the city to improve bus services for passengers.

Under the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), the main stop outside the Queen's Medical Centre (above) will see:

* Changes to the line of the kerb to help buses pulling up to the stop and making it easier for passengers to get on and off;
* Tactile ‘warning’ paving to help people with visual impairments or blindness to navigate and locate the boarding point;
* The issue of rutting – depressions in the road surface left by bus tyres over time – addressed through the application of a ‘Hardipave’ treatment;
* Pavement resurfacing between the bus stop and the pedestrian crossing

You can read more about the scheme here [ [link removed] ].

Meanwhile, new bus lanes are being added around Crown Island to help with bus times and reliability.

The overnight works, which will be completed by the end of November, will introduce the two lanes on the A609 Wollaton Road and make improvements to local bus stops and pedestrian access.

We understand that there have been some initial issues with traffic in the area while these changes bed in. Transport officers at the council will be monitoring these closely over the next few weeks.

More on the Crown Island works here [ [link removed] ] and the wider BSIP scheme here [ [link removed] ].
