November is National Native American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate diverse Indigenous histories, traditions, and cultures while also acknowledging historical and ongoing injustices.
About 9.7 million people identify as American Indian and Alaska Native alone or in combination with other races. With hundreds of federally recognized sovereign tribes, still others without federal recognition, and an Indigenous population whose presence on the continent long predates the US’s establishment, these communities are a critical part of the nation’s past, present, and future.
