And last month, we learned that at least two women died after they were unable to access legal abortion care in their home state of Georgia.

Even still, legislators across the country are willing to continue denying care to the people who need it, prioritizing political extremism over medical realities.

In a country without a federal paid leave program, caregivers like me have to decide if we go to work or stay home and take care of ourselves or a family member.

Millions of people are faced with an unimaginable choice between taking care of a loved one or losing employment and health care benefits every day. The time for a federal paid leave program is now, so we can all care for our families without losing employment and income.

By Livia Follet | The fastest known time (F.K.T.) on the Appalachian Trail has never been held by a woman, until now. Just minutes before midnight on Sept. 21, Tara Dower became the fastest known person to hike the Appalachian Trail, reaching Georgia’s Springer Mountain 39 days, 18 hours and 5 minutes after she began her journey in Maine. 

Averaging 54 miles a day, Dower crossed 14 states and hiked 2,189 miles with 465,000 feet of vertical gain—dropping 13 hours off the previous record set in 2018. 

Ms. spoke with Dower about being a woman in ultra-endurance sports, her recent F.K.T. and love for the Appalachian Trail.
