Friend,

We have 66 days left before Trump takes office. That means 66 days to lay
the groundwork for our resistance to his barrage of attacks against the
very core of our democracy.

While many of us may still be grieving and trying to make sense of what
happened, it is essential that we act now, before Trump is officially
installed in the White House. From nominating a clown car of cabinet
members to promising swift action on a ban of trans student athletes,
Trump has made it clear that he will start his destructive legislative
rampage on Day 1 in office.(1,2)

One of the most effective things we can right now do to protect our
democracy is demand that Senate Democrats confirm the 26 outstanding
Biden’s judicial appointments — including federal district and appeals
court judges.

We’ve seen all too clearly what the Republican judicial takeover looks
like: It’s the overturning of the Dobbs decision, threats to marriage
equality, and unqualified conservative demagogues making judicial
decisions that impact us all.

Even in a deep blue state like California, we are not immune to the
machinations of the courts. From enforcement of immigration laws to
protections against hate crimes, state, federal and appellate courts shape
and interpret our laws. And, judges appointed to lower courts today may
one day be in the running for Supreme Court seats.

Extremists realized all this long ago, and they've engaged in a years-long
project to stack the courts with conservatives. It’s enough to look at the
5th Circuit Court District, which Slate has called a “factory for fringe
conservative theories,” to see what this damage looks like.(3) While we
can’t reverse this trend in just two months, we can make sure that Trump
isn’t left with two dozen seats to fill the minute he steps into office.
