John, it’s House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. I wanted to share my thoughts on the 2024 election with you.
In an adverse electoral climate, House Democrats exceeded expectations, re-electing at least 27 of our 31 Frontline incumbents with one race still too close to call. We successfully defended four competitive open districts and flipped at least eight Republican-held seats.
House Democrats gave it our all, running dynamic, forward-looking and people-centered campaigns. While we fell just a few seats short of regaining control of Congress in January, we managed to hold Republicans to a razor-thin majority — an unprecedented outcome in a so-called presidential wave election.
The anticipated nationwide surge for Trump did not materialize in the House thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our incumbents, candidates and supporters. Moving forward, House Democrats will engage in a thoughtful and comprehensive discussion about how to build upon the foundation we've laid. It is a discussion that we embrace.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to you – our grassroots supporters, incredible donors and hardworking volunteers who knocked doors, made phone calls, sent texts and signed postcards.
In the new Congress, House Democrats will continue to seek bipartisan common ground whenever possible to improve the lives of the American people while standing firm against far-right extremism whenever necessary.
