Hi there,
As we all sort out the aftermath of this election cycle, GGWash is reflecting on [[link removed]] our commitment to affect change on the local level [[link removed]] . Now, more than ever, we must come together and work hard for the future we want to see.
These social events that we post in this bi-monthly update might seem like small actions, but change always starts in a small package. I hope you will avail yourselves of them and get just a little more involved.
Two ideas to start:
Are you a news hound when it comes to land use, housing and transportation issues? Apply to join us as a Breakfast Links Curator! [[link removed]]
Rather have a beverage of choice with like-minded individuals? Come hang out with us tomorrow at Maketto at the Capitol Hill Meet-up [[link removed]] . Bring the family!
Upcoming Events
Tracking Equity - Opportunities, Contrasts and Challenges [[link removed]]
Tuesday, November 19, 10:00am-Noon
The Anacostia Building - 1 Physics Ellipse Dr., College Park, MD [[link removed]]
We want equitable transit-oriented development throughout our MD suburbs, but how can we achieve it? Join us as we hear from experts about ongoing development along Maryland's Purple and Blue Lines, with Chelsea Allinger, GGWash's executive director, moderating the panel discussion. The event is free but RSVP [[link removed]] is required.
Capitol Hill Meet-up [[link removed]]
Tuesday, November 19, 5:30pm-7:30pm
Maketto , 1351 H St NE, Washington, DC [[link removed]]
Join us for drinks and community on H St! We'll connect with other folks who think that cities should be for people, not for cars, and who want to see more housing, more affordable housing, and the land-use regulations necessary to support the above—plus, hear what GGWash is working on, and what you can do to get involved. Families are welcomed and encouraged to attend. We'll have some crafts and games on hand for our younger guests.
GGWash and Friends of White Oak Happy Hour [[link removed]]
Wednesday, November 20, 6:30pm-8:30pm
Jewel of India , 10151 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring [[link removed]]
White Oak is an area of eastern Montgomery County with a rich history: Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring here, and it inspired Carol Black to create the sitcom The Wonder Years. It also has an exciting future, in part due to the advocacy of the Friends of White Oak, which was formed to build community and push for more public and private investment here.
That’s why we’re excited to partner with Friends of White Oak [[link removed]] for a happy hour! We’ll get to hang out, enjoy drinks and snacks, and talk about how to make East County an even better place to live, work, and gather.
Readers and Writers Happy Hour [[link removed]] (rescheduled!)
Tuesday, December 3, 6:00pm-8:00pm
The Wonderland Ballroom, Upstairs , 1 [[link removed]] 101 Kenyon St NW, Washington, DC [[link removed]] [[link removed]]
Join us for this special happy hour to meet and celebrate the writers and volunteers who make the GGWash publication possible -- and the readers who make that work worthwhile. Connect with everyone from Breakfast Links curators to GGWash staff and writers, chat about your favorite stories, and maybe even learn how to become a contributor yourself.
Get Involved
[[link removed]] Join our Breakfast Links team! [[link removed]]
Our Breakfast Links Curators kickstart each day at GGWash, working with our editors to select six to 10 engaging stories that provide a snapshot of recent local urbanist news. One of our fantastic team members is wrapping up. We'd love to welcome a new volunteer to help us fill that shift. Maybe it can be you? Let us know you're interested! [[link removed]]
[link removed] [[link removed]] Write for us [[link removed]]
GGWash is able to keep publishing great content thanks to the community members who write for us. We're looking for pitches from volunteer contributors. Have a specific idea for a story? You can submit your pitch through our pitch form [[link removed]] . If you would like to talk with us more about what it means to write for GGWash, please email us at

Freedom of speech. Image by Ted Eytan used with permission. [[link removed](1)_800_533_90.jpg] We’re allowed to train ANCs now, thanks to the First Amendment [[link removed]]
In January 2023, GGWash was all set to hold trainings for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners on the issues they might face and how to navigate DC’s bureaucracies. But the DC Board of Ethics and Accountability told Commissioners the trainings constituted “illegal gifts.” Partnering with the Institute for Justice, we sent a letter in September 2024 challenging BEGA’s position on the basis of freedom of speech. Find out what happened.
[link removed] [[link removed]] Americans chose. We’re thinking about what it means [[link removed]]
GGWash doesn’t usually weigh in on national matters like presidential elections. But an event like the second election of Donald Trump to the US presidency has us thinking about what it will mean for good governance, our region, and the people we care about.
Do Something with Alex and Dan [[link removed]] Do Something: The week of November 11, 2024 [[link removed]]
Do something local! This week: join us for happy hour in Capitol Hill and White Oak; celebrating small victories in DC, Maryland, and Virginia; and bus lanes on Georgia Avenue.
[[link removed]] See you out there!
All the Best,
