A message from City Council Deputy Leader Cllr Sally Longford:
Having had time to digest the recent changes in restrictions and with nice weather set for the weekend some of us will be planning to venture out a little further to take our daily exercise. All our parks are open to walkers and cyclists and the car parks are open at all sites apart from Newstead Abbey. All buildings will remain closed including the cafes and toilets and play parks are still closed too.
I would stress that social distancing measures remain very much in place and we must all keep two metres away from anyone who is not from our household. It is really important that we don?t get complacent and risk a second wave of infections. The government?s guidance on this is clear ? public gatherings are prohibited and the police will take positive actions to protect the public should individuals endanger the public by not obeying social distancing.

Waste and Recycling Centre to open on Monday
While it is pleasing to be able to re-open our Waste and Recycling Centre on Monday, I would urge everyone to think twice about whether they really need to make use of it immediately. The Redfield Road site re-opens for city residents only one a one-in, one-out basis and with restrictions in place. We are expecting queues to get on to site and will have traffic management arrangements in place to keep the roads clear. I would reiterate that people should try to continue storing waste at home and use the service only if absolutely necessary - if you do turn up, please expect lengthy delays. Working towards schools reopening
We are responding to the Government announcement that schools will reopen on 1 June to primary school children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 ? as well as nurseries and other early years childcare settings. The safety of children and staff is our main priority, and we will be encouraging schools to take all precautions to minimise risk to pupils, parents or teachers.
We are working closely with schools to look at ways to scale up arrangements that have been in place throughout the lockdown for smaller numbers of children. This might include smaller class sizes and staggered start and finish times, for example. We also know that parents will be anxious. We would like to reassure them that every measure will be taken to keep children as safe as possible. If parents choose to keep their children at home, they will not be fined for non-attendance.

Full council
I am pleased that even under the current restrictions we are still able to run Full Council on Monday as scheduled. This meeting attended by all councillors meets six times a year. The biggest decisions, such as the acceptance of policies and the budget, are reserved for full council. Due to social distancing measures, we will be meeting via Zoom and the whole session will be live streamed via the City Council?s YouTube channel so members of the public will still be able to observe.

I have been astounded by the entrepreneurial spirit and will to support local communities that the city?s charities and community groups have shown, such as Grey Friars in St Ann?s.
