Dear John,
Right now, the Biden Administration must take steps to end the genocide in Palestine and protect the communities at most immediate risk from the incoming Trump administration.
At PowerSwitch Action, we are committed to building a world that values the brilliance, potential, and contributions of every person. Our vision of a multiracial feminist democracy is one of safety, dignity, and the ability for everyone to thrive—both in our country and across the globe.
A year ago we issued this statement [[link removed]] mourning all of the lives lost, calling for an end to ongoing violence in the Middle East funded by U.S. military aid, and affirming the Palestinian peoples’ equal right to dignity, peace, and freedom. Israel’s continued assault on Gaza and Lebanon is a direct contradiction of our values and vision. It is a genocide that’s being paid for with our tax dollars and making American corporations rich.
Five of the biggest weapons manufacturers in the world are based in the U.S. and some have boasted about skyrocketing stock prices in the past year. While our own communities here in the U.S. struggle to afford homes and food and healthcare, as people recover from the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, the United States continues to deliver funds and arms to Israel while American corporations reap the benefits of war.
Conditions cannot improve in Palestine — where more than 40,000 people have been killed, tens of thousands have been injured and displaced, and more than half of the homes, hospitals, and universities in the region have been destroyed — when the US is funding and enabling this destruction to continue.
President-elect Trump has been vocal in his unconditional support for Israel’s assault. This makes the remaining months of the Biden Administration a critical moment for peace. We join human rights groups, interfaith groups, climate justice groups, and many more across the country and around the world in calling for the Biden Administration to stop arming and funding Israel and to use all tools at its disposal to end this genocide now.
Similarly, the Biden Administration must also act (while it still can) to mitigate the incoming administration’s likely attacks on communities here in the United States. Project 2025 has laid out a deeply disturbing agenda, and on the campaign trail President-elect Trump has vilified immigrants, Palestinians and Muslims more broadly, queer and trans people, and anyone who has disagreed with him. There is much we will have to do to defend each other in the coming years, but right now there are steps the Biden Administration can and must take. We join the immigrant justice community in calling for increased protections for immigrants and their families.
We are facing perilous times, and we will all have to dig deep. But right now, the Biden Administration can use its power to shape the conditions on which we will fight in 2025. We urge the President to take the steps this moment demands.
