"Democrats Pin Hopes On Social Security In Iowa Senate Race"
-- HuffPost, 5/12/2020
John, I carry the fight for our hardworking families in my heart. Please read why this race is personal for me below:
When I was 24, my first husband died in a tragic workplace accident. In an instant I became a single mom to a young son with another one on the way. While I was left picking up the pieces, Social Security survivor benefits helped keep my family out of poverty.
When I was down, I was given a hand up. Friends, family, my husband's union, and Social Security survivor benefits helped us get our feet back on the ground.
You see, when it comes to Social Security, it's one of those fights that I'll carry in my heart. I've seen firsthand how Social Security can be a lifeline to our hardworking families.
As I talk to Iowans across the state, I hear similar stories from people who rely on Social Security to stay afloat. So when I heard my extreme Republican opponent say she wanted to gut Social Security "behind closed doors" it was personal to me.
We should be working to protect programs like Social Security. It's an earned benefit for hardworking families so they can get back on their feet and so people don't go into poverty, and that's exactly what it did for me.
As Iowa's next senator, I will always fight to protect Social Security.
Thank you,
Theresa
