Mozambique has one of the most liberal abortion laws in Africa. Abortion is available on request until 12 weeks of pregnancy. However, many still face challenges accessing services, or do not even know they have a right to safe abortion care.

Since first receiving SAAF funding in 2020, ICRH-M has now provided over 3000 people with safe abortion and post-abortion care. We spoke with their staff, volunteers and service users and have shared four interviews on our website in English, French and Spanish.
 

"Before we did this work we received patients with complications from unsafe abortions. We lost women who died from unsafe abortions, some others lost their ability to get pregnant again.  

But now we don’t see these situations. Because as soon as women know they don’t want to be pregnant, they know they can go to a health centre to get safe abortion services."

SAAF started funding Women for Women's Human Rights (WWHR) at the start of this year. They are already changing the conversation about abortion in Türkiye. As their research has pointed out - although the law allows for abortion on request, in reality access to services is very restricted. They found that just 4% of public hospitals in Türkiye actually provide abortion services.

They continue to work with partners Mor Çati women's shelter and Women on Web to push for universal access to affordable abortion care, and the introduction of abortion medication to the country.
