In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the National Constitution Center is hosting a series of programs and activities highlighting the history of Indigenous peoples, tribal governments, and their relationship to the U.S. Constitution and American democracy.

Here are some offerings specifically for you and your students:

We invite you and your students to participate in a discussion with Jeremy Johnson, cultural education director of the Delaware Tribe of Indians.

🗓️ Professional Learning: Native American's Contributions to U.S. Constitutional History

Online | Wednesday, November 20 | 6:30 p.m. ET

In this free session, educators will delve into the comprehensive historical context of Native American history, examining its constitutional implications and their significance.

Jeffrey Rosen was joined by Keith Richotte Jr., author of the forthcoming book The Worst Trickster Story Ever Told: Native America, the Supreme Court, and the U.S. Constitution and Matthew L.M. Fletcher, author of The Ghost Road: Anishinaabe Responses to Indian Hating to explore how Native American law has evolved from the Marshall Court to the present day—tracing how the Court came to grant the federal government broad authority over tribal affairs, and how tribes have begun to reassert their sovereignty under the Roberts Court.

Deepen your knowledge of landmark Supreme Court cases from different historical eras, engage with the Center’s nonpartisan educational resources, and collaborate with educators from around the country at a Weekend Workshop this spring.

This set of Weekend Workshops is only open to applicants in rural, remote, or underserved communities.

Participants can expect to:  

• Engage with leading scholars on topics covering landmark Supreme Court cases 
• Discover historical content through guided tours of the Center’s exhibitions 
• Explore our educational framework and learn about our nonpartisan educational resources, such as the Interactive Constitution and Constitution 101
• Collaborate with other attendees and the NCC Education team

Dates and themes:

• Friday, 3/28–Sunday, 3/30: Landmark Supreme Court Cases: The Founding Era 
• Friday, 4/25–Sunday, 4/27: Landmark Supreme Court Cases: The Second Founding 
• Friday, 5/16–Sunday, 5/18: Landmark Supreme Court Cases: Modern Connections 

The Center covers the costs of all travel, lodging, and meals for those selected to participate, but space is limited to no more than 15 educators. Applications are open until December 9 and notifications will be sent in January.

Full-Time Positions on the NCC Education Team

The NCC Education team is seeking two professional learning specialists (one remote and one based in Philadelphia) who will play key roles in the expansion of our professional development programs and trainings to educators both on-site at the Center and in states and localities across the country.

Position Summary:

• The professional learning specialist will also collaborate with other members of the Education department to develop interactive and relevant educational programming that aligns with the Center’s goals, and with educational best practices within the field for both student and adult learners.
• The specialist will lead tasks such as presenting sessions to educators and coordinate logistical efforts for all professional learning endeavors. They will also attend education and civics conferences nationwide to share information about the Center’s educational materials and programs.

We encourage all interested candidates to learn more about the roles and submit an application. All current or former members of NCC's Teacher Advisory Board and Teacher Advisory Council should note the affiliation in their application.
