Friend,

I hope you have been taking the time to rest, recover, and process the results of the last couple of weeks.

I wanted to send you a note about what I’ve been up to – because after a few days of sleep, it was right back to work this week at Senate orientation (and taking votes as a member of the House!) – and I’ve compiled some of the highlights below.

On Tuesday, I joined all of the other freshmen Senators in DC. Check out a group photo of the new Democratic Senators:

Senate orientation1

We set up our new temporary office space in the Hart Building, named after legendary Michigan senator Phil Hart. I was the only freshman to escape the basement, and get a room with a window – it felt like Phil Hart’s spirit looking down on me!

A lot of Senate school is learning about the logistics of being in the Senate, like meeting with current members about how to set up an office, taking our ID pictures, and learning about employment rules and ethics regulations.

But as a history nerd, my favorite parts have been the glimpses into the history of the Senate and the founding of our country. We got to visit the vaults of the National Archives and see some of our sacred documents, including original hand-edits by the Senate to the Bill of Rights, the original, pre-Constitution Oath of Office, signed by George Washington promising NOT to support the King of England, and, just for me, the original documents that President Andrew Jackson signed officially making Michigan a state in 1837.

On top of that, we got a tour of the Old Senate Chamber, which housed the Senate from 1819-1859.

This week has definitely made me feel the weight of history, and I’m ready to get to work as a Senator in the new year. In the meantime, we’re wrapping up some important business in the House (where we get kicked out of our office right before Thanksgiving.) I’ll hopefully fit in a little rest and family time too!

Wishing you and yours the best,

Elissa
