Dear Friend,

Yesterday, House Democrats proposed ([link removed][UNIQID]) a massive stimulus package including $37 billion for post-secondary institutions, plus $500 billion in aid to governors for state budget stabilization. The bill requires that states maintain pre-pandemic spending on higher education—essentially a return to the status quo.

The National Association of Scholars believes colleges and universities can and must do better than return to the status quo ([link removed][UNIQID]) . We are urging legislators and regulators to tie all bailout funds to reforms that address long-standing problems in American higher education.

Yet, Congress and the education-lobby has made its intent clear: no reform of higher education.

We can’t let this stand. Will you join us in ensuring public money is well spent ([link removed][UNIQID]) ?

Add your name to our open letter ([link removed][UNIQID]) and join us in urging the president to rescue American higher education through the reforms outlined in Critical Care ([link removed][UNIQID]) .

For far too long, American higher education has exploited the hopes of students and their families, as well as the goodwill of legislators and the American public. Millions of Americans have been plunged deeply into insupportable debt in order to fund huge increases in college administrative costs over the last 30 years. Administrative positions, including non-instructional staff, now consume more than 50% of higher education payroll costs. At the same time, colleges and universities offer a trivialized curriculum marked by animosity to America.

Our country deserves much better—and we can get it ([link removed][UNIQID]) .

Yours,
Peter Wood
