Indivisibles,

This Tuesday, May 12, was National Hospital Day, a day first declared by U.S. President Warren G. Harding in 1921 in the wake of the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic (sound familiar?). This year, we had plans to mark the occasion.

On May 12, Indivisible groups in Tallahassee, Phoenix, and Austin littered the grounds of their statehouses with body bags, representing the 81,000 American lives lost to COVID-19. Lives that could have been saved if not for President Trump and GOP Governors and Senators’ failure to adequately respond to the coronavirus pandemic.

These incredible actions generated national media attention for their destructive responses to the virus, the unnecessary deaths of thousands of Americans, and dangerous re-open orders in states around the country.

Watch our video coverage of the events below:

Now, get ready for our next Day of Action

Ready to get involved yourself? On or around May 20, we are joining with partners around the country to host a National Day of Mourning with public events around the country to acknowledge the over 84,000 coronavirus deaths due to the President’s failure.

These events will feature strong visuals like body bags, gravestones, or roses. For more information on how to organize your own protest, check out our People's Day of Action Toolkit for best practices and step-by-step instructions.

A note on social distancing

Before you begin planning your action, it’s important that you prepare for the changes to basic human interaction because of the high level of coronavirus contagion. We’re used to actions being a time of coming together, catching up, and using the power of togetherness to make huge, systematic change.

During this time, it is incredibly important that we maintain social distancing guidelines during these events. Actions should include as few people as possible (we recommend 3-5 participants), and everyone should assess their individual risk factors before participating.

To underscore this, we are not utilizing the Indivisible map for these actions to limit the chance of large gatherings.

Stay safe and stay informed!

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team

P.S. The House votes today on the next COVID package. Call your Representative and demand they pass the HEROES Act as it was introduced, without any motions to recommit or amendments to water it down. House Democrats introduced the HEROES Act as the fourth coronavirus relief package, but we’re worried Republicans will try to strip the bill of its most important protections with a motion to recommit

Working families are struggling to make ends meet. We need every protection in the HEROES Act to pass or lives will be at stake.
