The Doctor’s On Call

What to Know: Telemedicine—which has been invaluable in the pandemic—has earned a permanent place in our health care system, experts say.

The TPPF Take: Expanding telemedicine is part of TPPF’s Healthy Recovery agenda for the U.S.

“Telemedicine offers a convenient and safe alternative to traveling long distances to see a doctor,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “Texas should permanently eliminate regulations waived during the coronavirus outbreak that increased telemedicine access and lower costs.”

No Subsidies Needed

What to Know: A $350 million expansion project by Moda Midstream in San Patricio County will add capacity for holding 10 million barrels of crude oil. The project went forward despite county officials denying it taxpayer subsidies.

The TPPF Take: County commissioners pointed out that in return for the massive tax breaks they were asked for, Moda would have provided just 12 jobs.

“Policymakers, energy market participants, and voters must wake up to the fact that energy subsidies only serve to distort energy markets and create businesses that rely on government support,” says TPPF’s Brent Bennett. “If a project makes financial sense for a company—without taxpayer money thrown in—it will move forward, as Moda’s project did. Texas will continue to attract jobs and economic growth with low taxes and regulations, not with subsidies to politically-connected companies.”

There’s Good News

What to Know: Even in these trying times, there’s good news as Americans—and American companies—respond to the pandemic by helping each other.

The TPPF Take: It may feel like the end of the world—but it’s not.

“There are great stories out there about those in the private sector who have stepped up to help our neighbors, including our health care workers,” says TPPF’s Sam Johnson. “Americans have already demonstrated care and conscientiousness in stepping up to help out, at their own expense, that we’ll need as we reopen the economy. It’s time to do just that.”
