James, we’ve seen two different reactions within the Democratic Party to another election loss to Donald Trump.
On one side, Bernie Sanders said that Democrats abandoned the working class and must embrace a true progressive economic agenda for all. “While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change.” He said the Party must choose between the working class and the billionaire class. On the other side, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison called Bernie’s words “straight up BS.” Harrison is the one who oversaw the Party for Trump’s victory and a GOP trifecta. He and other party elites seem ready to fight for the status quo — instead of trying to fight to win for the people. It’s no surprise when the Party is so beholden to corporate special interests. Our Revolution Executive Director Joseph Geevarghese wrote in The Hill this week, assessing the shortfalls of the Harris campaign that Democratic leadership must grapple with if the Party has a chance at winning in the future.
Joseph said, “Harris might have seized the moment with a powerful populist economic message, naming real corporate adversaries like the world’s wealthiest man (and Trump’s top donor) Elon Musk. Instead, she courted her own billionaire surrogate Mark Cuban as well as war hawk Liz Cheney, hoping to woo wealthy donors and Republicans nostalgic for the Bush years.”
Our Revolution called for the campaign to focus on popular progressive economic messaging, but the Harris team chose to placate its corporate backers instead.
We organized around what our fight for progressive change under Harris would look like, but the Democratic Party failed to put forth a campaign that could defeat Trump.
One of our most important fights now is to transform the Democratic Party so that it represents Bernie’s agenda — the working class people’s agenda — and kicks out the influence of the billionaire, corporate class. Or else we’re doomed to lose elections to right-wing extremists going forward.
